What we were up to at Flink Labs in the last week or so.

  • Dreaming about astrobots after listening to Fiona Romeo’s talk from Webstock
  • Attending the NGV Dali exhibition and party
  • Studying basic (school level) astronomy concepts for visualisation metaphors
  • Sketching out twitter/flickr visualisation concepts
  • Preparing a submission to the Gov2.0 taskforce here in Australia. Great fit with Visualizar’09 workshop concepts.
  • Working with key clients on user engagement strategies and real time transport visualisations.

Post launch busi-ness

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Well its been a hectic couple of weeks since we launched. Tweaks to the site, lots of contacts from old friends and new friends, especially on Twitter, and plenty of working away on new project opportunities.

Inspired by Kicker, we’re going to try and give weekly updates on what we’ve been up to and some of our thoughts here. For the more daily snippets of thoughts you should follow Flink Labs on Twitter.

We’re very much enjoying the conversations that we’re having around data visualisation and how it can be used. So if you’d like to talk to us please get in touch.

What we’ve been up to this week at Flink Labs.

  • Investigating how data visualisation can help people better communicate with the local government/council; and in the process finding our local council tweets!
  • Prototyping visualisations of significant trees in the area. Moving from a hard to find PDF list to an interactive “map” has some real promise.
  • Starting to play with Adobe Flex
  • Admiring the “Just Landed” work from Jer Thorp, especially the process he took.
  • Listening to Bat for Lashes
  • Visiting the NGV for the John Brack exhibition and marveling at the almost child like hand drawn maps he did.

Welcome to Flink Labs!!

We're pleased to announce the launch of our website and the start of our new business.

Flink Labs is a data visualisation studio, based in Melbourne, Australia. We work with our clients to create engaging, meaningful data visualisations that help them discover new insights or tell a story based on their data.

As the complexity and volume of data continues to increase dramatically, the never ending rows and columns in spreadsheets and the ubiquitous bar charts and pie charts no longer cut it.

Data visualisation can help you move beyond the bar chart, giving your audience new perspectives on your data. Be they experts in the field or lay persons seeking to better understand public data, data visualisation can assist.

But it's not just a pretty picture. Data visualisation can deliver clear business benefits, be it faster and better decision making, increased transparency and communication with your customers or gleaning better insight from a table of numbers.

Feel free to look around and subscribe to our Blog or follow us on Twitter to keep up with what's happening in the world of Flink Labs.

And if you're ready to move beyond the bar chart please contact us.
