This experimental map is one of a series of projects looking at public transport (trains, trams, buses and taxis) around Melbourne. We have done some work in this area before and are doing more with some key clients at the moment, more on this in the coming month.

The map uses the brand new Polymaps library developed by SimpleGeo and Mike Bostock. The map itself consists of two layers, the first is the locations of all the stops and the second, the actual map tiles (custom themed with Cloudmade), are overlayed on top of the data and made slightly opaque. The result is a map in which the data and location information are both very understandable.

The ability to overlay different sources of data onto themeable maps within the browser is a great step forward and we expect to be doing much more work in this space with various sorts of urban data.
