Applied AI research & strategic prototyping

Flink Labs works a little bit in the future.

Flink Labs is an independent applied research and prototyping studio for AI, data and intelligent systems.

We help organisations turn consequential questions about AI and intelligent systems into working evidence they can act on.

Our engagements are designed around the decision you need to make: a five-day AI Opportunity Review to identify what is worth pursuing, a four- to eight-week AI Prototype Sprint to answer important questions with a working prototype, or an ongoing AI Lab Partnership that provides sustained research and prototyping capability.

Led by Ben Hosken, the lab combines applied research, working prototypes and senior technical judgement to turn uncertain questions into tangible evidence.

The future will not arrive as a chatbot.

AI is already changing work, software, creativity and daily life. But the deeper shift will be stranger than adding copilots to existing systems.

Intelligence will move into tools, devices and built environments, becoming more distributed, embodied and entangled with how people decide and act.

Flink Labs makes these changes concrete through working prototypes, simulations, interfaces and physical-digital artefacts; so organisations can encounter what is becoming possible rather than merely read predictions about it.

How we help

We deliver clarity with evidence

The best AI opportunities are discovered by making, not specified in advance.

Flink Labs explores important possibilities that are not yet clear: unresolved questions, emerging challenges and technical possibilities not yet understood well enough to act on.

Flink Labs works with product, innovation, digital, data and operational leaders facing consequential questions about AI and intelligent systems.

We build small, credible prototypes that your team can experience using real workflows, representative data and the people whose judgement matters.

These prototypes allow a team to see what works, encounter what does not, test assumptions and decide whether to build, invest, change direction, continue investigating or stop.

AI Prototype Sprint
Flagship engagement

AI Prototype Sprint

Build a working AI prototype that answers the questions worth answering.

A focused four- to eight-week engagement that designs, builds and demonstrates a working AI prototype.

Working output

Working prototype

Duration

Typically 4–8 weeks

Investment

A$30,000–A$60,000 + GST

Decision

Should we build this for real?

You receive a working prototype, weekly evidence, evaluation with relevant users or stakeholders, technical and operational findings, a production pathway and a complete agreed handover.

AI Opportunity Review

AI Opportunity Review

Find the opportunity worth pursuing

A focused five-day review of the question, the real workflow, the available data and the assumptions that matter.

You'll leave with a clear recommendation on what should be prototyped, investigated further or deliberately set aside.

What, if anything, should we pursue? 5 business days A$9,000 + GST 4–6 hours of client involvement

Case studies

From uncertain possibilities to working evidence and defensible decisions.

IP Australia

Testing machine learning for trade mark examination

A six-week prototype combined document extraction, text classification and image analysis to test whether AI could assist trade mark examiners. It revealed credible potential—and why the technology was not yet ready for production.

Healthcare

Turning patient experience into visible priorities

A platform operating since 2014 replaced slow annual reports with recurring, interactive patient-experience evidence, then evolved to include comment analysis, driver modelling and human-readable insights.

Retail analytics

Finding patterns in supermarket movement

Movement traces, basket summaries and probabilistic modelling became an interactive tool for revealing store-specific patterns in dwell, traffic and promotion performance.

Why organisations choose Flink Labs

Principal-led

Every engagement is led directly by Ben Hosken, from the first conversation through research, prototyping, interpretation and recommendations. No senior-to-junior hand-off.

Research that builds

We don’t begin with a predetermined solution. We investigate, prototype and refine as evidence emerges, helping organisations navigate uncertainty with confidence.

Technically credible

Working prototypes expose the realities of data, AI models, integrations and workflows early, reducing risk before larger investments are made.

Independent thinking

Recommendations follow the evidence, not a delivery agenda. We value honest conclusions over confirming assumptions or selling larger projects.

Built for independence

Every prototype can be handed to your internal team or delivery partner. We create capability, not long-term dependency.

Founder experience

Led by a founder who has built, scaled and exited technology companies, combining deep technical expertise with practical product and commercial judgement.

Bring the consequential question, the strange possibility or the first glimpse of a product that does not quite exist yet.

You may be considering a new AI capability, trying to make a complex system understandable, exploring a different kind of interface or wondering whether an emerging technical possibility is real enough to pursue.

Flink Labs can help you investigate it, make it tangible and use an evidence-based approach to guide your decisions.

Discuss an AI opportunity

Suitable engagements generally begin at A$9,000. You do not need a finished brief.

Independent AI applied research and prototyping studio.

Built for consequential questions where proprietary knowledge, complex information flows or expert judgement require a new kind of intelligent product or capability.
